Mount Jahorina

Last weekend we went with our co-workers (Suzan, Nick, Maxine, Roger and Susan) to Mount Jahorina which is in Serbian Territory. It was the women's downhill course in the '84 Olympics. This is also the mountain that the school goes to for a week during January or February for their ski week. Yes, we actually take five days and go up to the mountain to ski. They offer ski lessons, and the kids get to ski for a week and gain a quarter's worth of P.E. credit. Something to look forward to this winter.

Roger and Susan
Back to our trip...We drove for about 45 minutes to the mountain to hike. We got there and parked our cars. We have to take two cars because there are seven of us, so we have divided the cars into the young peoples' car and the over 50 persons' car. We think it is funny, but the older folk don't think it is as funny. So after arriving there were a couple selling homemade liquor and herbs that they had collected and dried. So we spent the first 15 minutes talking to them and having them convince us that we needed to buy their goods. We told them that we would stop back by on the way down from our hike. Whether they truly understood or not, we left on our hike. We started up the road and stopped to take severval pictures. It was a beautiful day. People were picking something in the fields along the road, so Suzan stopped and asked them in Bosnia what they were picking and they said blueberries. As we continued our hike there were more people picking things in the fields.

We spent about one hour and a half hiking up the road (later we found out that we could drive the whole way up). So maybe another time we will drive to a section and then walk further. We decided that we would stop and turn around and try to find the trout farm for lunch.

Once we got back to the bottom, Maxine bought some liquor and Nick and his wife Suzan bought some Chai tea from the older couple we talked to before our hike. The liquor was very strong by their reactions from taking a sip.

Hotels Resturant
Before leaving the mountain Suzan wanted to show us a hotel that you can hang out in when you come up to ski since there are no lodges to hang out in like there are in Colorado. The hotel was very nice, but we were told that it is pretty expensive to stay the night.

On the road to the trout farm, Nick was worried that he might not be able to find it, but he found it with no problems. We saw sheep and the hangout where the Serbian army hung out during the war. We aren't sure if it is the true place, but that is what we were told. It was strange to think that 15 years ago this area was covered by armies and now we are driving through to go to a trout farm for lunch.

We made it to the trout farm and lucky for us it was open. I guess sometimes you go to a restuarant and maybe the next time you go it may or may not be open still. We walked around and took pictures of the ponds and chickens before sitting down to order our food. The food was delicious and what a great day for hiking and ending with two trout on our plates, salads and bread. Before we left, Susan and I went in to get a business card from them so maybe we will go there again to enjoy great food.
